Stich marker is always use for our knitting project. Sometimes in crocheting too.

Use a plastic ring ( http://craftandme.com/craftmaterial.php#accesorries  ). Piece of cake. You only need to cut the ring with siccor or cutter at any place you like. Da…da… ready for use.
